Murano glass chandelier, Gino Vistosi, 1970
Building with light: This is what designer Gino Vistosi does with Murano glass. Tile by tile, the creative design of this chandelier tells the story of a glass mosaic that forms a bipyramidal figure. Hooks are placed all along the metal structure so that the 196 square pieces of champagne-coloured glass can be carefully hung. The pieces are rough on one side and polished on the other, giving them a fluid appearance. The final effect is a reflecting jewel, a metaphor for the composed preciousness that once dominated the entrance hall of an ancient Venetian noble palace.
