Samo table, Carlo Scarpa, 1970

In the 1970s, Italy witnessed a creative explosion in the world of design and one of its protagonists was Carlo Scarpa. One of his most iconic works is the “Samo” dining table, part of Simon’s “Ultrarazionale” collection. It is characterised by its architectural legs, reminiscent of Roman columns, in grey granite: The granite itself is enriched with small fossils and shells that give the stone a delicate and evocative light. The design of “Samo” is a strong reaction to the widespread use of polyester in design at the time. The table, with its oval top supported by solid legs secured by four dowels, conveys a sense of extraordinary sturdiness despite its proportions.
